Non Objective Art
Cotton trained as an artist at the University of South Carolina, Rhode Island School of Design and under the instruction of various painters in both North and South America.
She earned a BA in Fine Arts from the University or South Carolina, 1990. After a career in Commercial Interior Design she returned to painting in 1996. She is currently working as an artist in Denver Colorado.
She draws inspiration from recycling, music festivals, dance/ballet, and travel. Some of her favorite pieces just came about from the act of playing with paint and paper, "I consciously react with the medium, the activity of creating is paramount, and therefore the results happen automatically with the unconscious influence of experiences and emotions." Her latest accomplishment was winning a hotel card key design contest for Marriott’s SpringHill Suites.
Her work is in private collections throughout The United States and Canada, South Africa, New Zealand & Europe. Cotton is fortunate to have work in local businesses as Bank of Choice, WSI Personnel, The Children’s Hospital, ph7 Health & Fitness, Bechta Group Ltd., Boulder Foods, Portable Computer Systems and Liberty Global.
Cotton has secured several commissions for private homes, a coffee table book honoring the new millennium “ La Danza Cosmica ” by Martin Huerta, awards for The Leukemia Lymphoma Association's; "Boy and Girl of the Year" award, the Cystic Fibrosis Gala and The Children’s Hospital Denver.
She enjoys working in water media and collage and now uses oils. It is hard to
categorize her style and Cotton is just fine with not being labeled. As more private collectors and businesses continue to support her art Cotton is garnering the discipline and confidence it takes to become a prolific artist.
This summer Cotton will study with artist Linda Geary. She is Professor of Painting and Graduate Fine Arts at California College of the Arts in San Francisco
